Year 10 and 12 Teaching and Learning Update

22nd April 2020

Dear Parents/ Guardians

As we begin the new summer term, albeit remotely, we wanted to take the opportunity to provide our EBS community with an update on Teaching and Learning.

We are fully aware the anxiety the sudden school closure may have caused members of our community and especially for our Year 10 and Year 12 students who are now over a third of the way through their chosen GCSE and A Level courses.

At this uncertain time, we want to assure you and your child that teaching staff at East Barnet School are working tirelessly to ensure all students are gaining access to meaningful and relevant learning opportunities through our learning platform, Skooler.

For Year 10 and Year 12 students specifically, we have requested that staff continue to set work that would have been completed in school under normal circumstances, so that students can keep on track and up to date with their studies. We have been really impressed with the variety of assignments set so far and particularly with colleagues who have actively sought to communicate on a more personal level with classes, though methods such as adding voiceovers to PowerPoint presentations to aid understanding. Students have been asked to upload specific pieces of work completed to Skooler, so that class teachers can provide feedback and guidance. Receiving feedback on work completed will hopefully go some way in reducing anxiety during these unprecedented times.

In addition to the assignments set by class teachers on Skooler, please encourage your child to make good use of the other digital resources that we as a school subscribe to and those offered free online. We will include reference to some of these in the weekly communication you will receive from Ms Swaine.

We kindly ask that you monitor your child’s engagement with the work set in all chosen subjects so that they are not disadvantaged by a knowledge gap on our return to school.

If you are facing any technical issues in accessing the work, please contact Mr Sadler or a member of our IT team who will be more than happy to help. If you or your child has a subject specific query, please contact the relevant subject teacher by email. If you are unsure of their email address, then please send your email to and indicate in the subject field who the email is intended for, so it can be forwarded promptly and with ease. If you have a query about Teaching and Learning at a whole school level or would like to offer feedback on what’s working well (WWW) or even better if (EBI), regarding the home learning experience, please email me directly at

Staff will endeavour to return emails promptly, but please be mindful that some teachers may be unwell or caring for family members who are unwell.

We are so looking forward to our school reopening and to return to a sense of normality. Please remember that despite currently being apart we remain a strong community and are here to help each other in as many ways possible.

Stay home, stay positive and keep well.

Kind regards

Mrs Hurst
Associate Deputy Headteacher
