Science

Welcome to the EBS Science Faculty! We hope to provide you with all the information you need about this faculty, but if you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

At East Barnet School we intend to capture the imagination of our science students and get them to appreciate the world in different ways. We intend to develop their curiosity by improving their proficiency in five important traits of a successful scientist (Knowledge, Experimental, Analysis, Maths, Literacy).

We intend to use these traits as the educational vehicle to deliver a challenging curriculum that supports their scientific curiosity. We want to challenge the way our students perceive and understand the world around them and give them the skills to do so.

We will encourage our science students to develop into scientifically literate citizens, who are confident, collaborative, analytical thinkers, problem solvers and always willing to ask a question!

Implementation:

As a faculty it has been agreed that best learning takes place when there is a context. Students are encouraged to link and develop ideas. A good lesson has structure and a clear route through it. There is a story. Students are provided with opportunities to express their ideas and get feedback from peers and teachers. Students can be allowed to fail; promoting responsibility for their own learning (it is not about teacher giving all the answers, but to provide the scaffold that promotes success). ‘Safety nets’ are planned, and strategies employed that allow students to reflect on the steps required to make further progress. This allows us to teach to the top, even in mixed ability settings.
