Design & Technology

Welcome to the EBS Design & Technology Faculty! We hope to provide you with all the information you need about this faculty, but if you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Design and Technology aims to develop creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. Students learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present Design and Technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world.

Product Design

The Design and Technology Product Design department at East Barnet School is one of the best in the country. Our facilities are almost second to none and that is the result of continued passion from our numerous and experienced staff and the interest and success of our students. Our staff bring their expertise to lessons, from being keen film makers and photographers, to precision engineers, makers and CAD designers.

Product Design at EBS continues to lead students in being engineers, designers, architects, product developers, technicians and problem solvers as well as providing them with useful life skills. Our curriculum aims to provide a breadth of practical and technical skills, knowledge and creativity. Students at KS3 will experience working with a range of tools, machinery and equipment in numerous different materials, providing them with knowledge that enables them to make considered choices at GCSE. Students continue developing practical skills and knowledge at GCSE and A level but with an element of choice. The link to STEM is promoted continuously, with students mastering CAD (Computer Aided Design) and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacture) which gives them an advantage when selecting future degree or higher education courses and careers.

Our reputation as a centre of excellence in D&T has been built from past and present staff and students who have links with industry, exam setting, marking and moderating and Universities including Middlesex and Goldsmiths’. In addition, our amazing designer in residence leads students to success in large projects and National competitions.

Food and Nutrition

We regard Food and Nutrition as an integral part of widening our student’s knowledge and skills in order for them to be able to lead healthy lives. It will also give them confidence in their skills and abilities to be independent adults and prepare simple delicious food which is often cheaper than the more convenient ready prepared food. We develop their understanding and knowledge of nutrition, healthy eating, food preparation, cooking techniques and sensory characteristics. At East Barnet school we want to instil a love and excitement for cooking by providing them with the opportunities to trial a range of dishes that are culturally diverse, explore new and challenging cooking techniques and allow them the creatively to adapt the recipes they make.

Through studying food and nutrition, students will:

– develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks confidently and to participate successfully in an increasingly health-conscious world.

– build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality food dishes for a wide range of users

– understand and apply the principles of nutrition to what they make and their everyday food choices.

– Demonstrate safe and hygienic cooking practice when planning, preparing and cooking using a variety of cooking techniques and equipment.

– Encourage students to understand the environmental, social, and moral impact food has on the local and global community.

We are committed to supporting each individual in our classes and to sharing our love of Food and Nutrition, with high expectations about classroom behaviour and the’ I want to learn’ ethos of the school. We take care to provide a positive learning environment, inclusive of all members of the class and we are aspirational about the progress which each learner can make. We want to provide our students with Knowledge and skills that enrich and continue to provide pleasure beyond their years at EBS

Textiles Technology

Textiles lies at the heart of our everyday lives and we feel passionately about teaching our students its importance and functionality as well inspiring them to explore its endless creative possibilities. We develop their understanding and knowledge of Fibres & Fabrics and their properties, decorative and construction techniques. We encourage our students to explore and not be afraid to create unique and individual products that reflect the designs they have developed. Students will be exposed to a wide range of equipment that is both exciting to use and gives an insight into the technologies that are used in industry.

Through studying Textile Technology, students will:

– develop the creative, technical and practical expertise needed to perform everyday tasks

– build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and make high-quality textile products for a wide range of users

– critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products and the work of others

– encourage students to understand the environmental, social, and moral impact textiles has on the local and global community.

– Confidently and safely use a range of specialist textile equipment that bring their designs to life.

We are committed to supporting each individual in our classes and to sharing our love of Textiles with high expectations about classroom behaviour and the’ I want to learn’ ethos of the school. We take care to provide a positive learning environment, inclusive of all members of the class and we are aspirational about the progress which each learner can make.
