Careers

A modern foreign language combines well with a wide range of subjects, both at A-Level and degree level, with languages highly valued by universities. Being able to speak another language makes you highly employable in a wide range of careers, as the skills and abilities that you gain from studying a language at A-Level are extremely versatile. According to the British Council, French, German and Spanish are three of the five most important languages for the British to learn. It is often stated that an inability to trade in languages other than British damages the UK’s export performance. This means that employees who use languages at work earn on average 8% more than others. Living in a global multilingual society, the ability to communicate in more than one language has never been more important.

Course Overview

Embarking on an A-Level in Spanish is an exciting journey that takes your language skills to new heights and expands your understanding of the world around you. Building on the vocabulary and grammar foundations established during KS4, this course invites students to engage with complex and global themes such as immigration, politics, and social justice. You will delve deep into the rich cultures and histories of Spanish-speaking countries, enhancing your appreciation for their traditions, arts, and lifestyles.

The AQA A-Level Spanish specification encourages students to explore a range of contemporary issues through a linguistic lens, fostering critical thinking and communication skills. You will analyse and discuss significant topics, gaining insights into how language shapes our understanding of society. In addition to honing your conversational skills, you will be required to read at least one work of literature, allowing you to explore Spanish-language authors and their contributions to global literature.

Through engaging with authentic materials, such as films, news articles, and music, you will gain a nuanced perspective on current events and cultural movements, making the learning experience dynamic and relevant. The course emphasises not just linguistic proficiency but also intercultural competence, preparing you for further studies or careers in fields such as international relations, translation, and education. This A-Level is not just about learning a language; it’s about opening doors to new experiences and perspectives, making it an invaluable asset in today’s interconnected world.
