Computing

Welcome to the EBS Computing Faculty! We hope to provide you with all the information you need about this faculty, but if you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

The Computing faculty at East Barnet School will ensure that students are aware of the cyber dangers in the real world, they will be able to protect themselves from becoming victims of computer fraud or cyber bullying and make sure that they do not pass on information about where they live, where they are or what they are doing. This will be achieved by providing students with lessons that actively raise their awareness of the cyber dangers and provide them with deep information about the cause and the consequences. We will also ensure that all learners have the opportunity to experience success and to embark on careers in the world of computing that require different knowledge and skills set by delivering vocational and technical subjects at KS3, KS4 and KS5. Designing and developing games, apps, publishing, websites and films or joining apprenticeships that are focused on cyber security, big data warehousing or networking roles are all careers that the computing team at EBS would like to provide a pathway for our students.

Our curriculum sequencing begins by building on Year 6 learning of block coding and considerations of the transition from primary to secondary when using mobile phones and social networking apps. We then develop computational thinking of our students providing them with a deep understanding of the fundamentals of programming. As students mature they are able to build on knowledge and explore a wider range of computing areas. This provides depth and breadth.

We provide what is worth learning by taking feedback from our students and by constantly refining units of learning to meet the current climate. This means that at the end of KS3 students are equipped to understand the world they live in regardless of their choices to continue studying computing or not. By the end of Year 7, students will be able to actively change settings on their apps to protect themselves, they will be able to make electronic artefacts for using block coding and static languages. By the end of Year 8 students will be able to create real world applications using knowledge of objects, events and action coding acquired by building on the learning. Year 8 students will be able to develop animation and predict outcomes by creating software models. By the end of Year 9 students will be able to make the right cyber choices concerning personal data and be able to develop programs using command line programming. All students at the end KS3 will have experienced obtained skills and the theory behind all qualifications available at KS4 and KS5 to make an informed decision about their level 2 and level 3 options.
